Let's be clear here....this list is published regarding pesticide residues found on different foods, the list does not talk about GMO. Because it's part of our mission at Power of 3 Nutrition to make sure we only put out true and healthy into the world...we have audited the list for what tends to be GMO vs NON-GMO by adding a * next to it with a note below the article.
“Strawberries remain at the top of the Dirty Dozen™ list of the EWG Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™, with spinach jumping to second place in the annual ranking of conventionally grown produce with the most pesticide residues.
EWG’s analysis of tests by the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that nearly 70 percent of samples of 48 types of conventional produce were contaminated with residues of one or more pesticides. USDA researchers found a total of 178 different pesticides and pesticide breakdown products on the thousands of produce samples they analyzed. The pesticide residues remained on fruits and vegetables even after they were washed and, in some cases, peeled.”
Know what you’re consuming and when and where to buy organic. Try and purchase organic when looking at the fruits and vegetables from EWG’s 2017 Dirty Dozen list… and when purchasing conventional (non-organic), look at EWG’s 2017 Clean Fifteen list. Also, check out where the produce is grown and when possible, purchase local.
(remember the list is based on pesticide reside, it does not address GMO)
11. Sweet bell peppers
*1. Sweet corn (see VIP note below)
6. Frozen sweet peas
**7. Papayas (see VIP note below)
11. Honeydew Melon
*Our opinion of "Clean" includes the topic of Non-GMO vs. GMO. We don't agree that any types of corn in the US are "clean" due to the fact 90% of the crops are GMO. Sorry! If you are trying to have a super clean diet beware of all fresh and processed corn unless it is labeled as Non-GMO or Organic . ALSO VIP, if you are trying to heal or detox - it's important to include ONLY Non-GMO & Organic foods in your diet if you can.
**Most Hawaiian papayas are GMO and may have pesticide residues systemically throughout. Do include papayas in your diet though, they are a very important source of so many nutrients and healing phytonutrients. So look for the gigantic papayas from south of the US border...they may not be as amazingly delicious as the ones from Hawaii, but will be "cleaner" in terms of GMO and pesticide residues.
